• Two words about the confusion between LockScreen HD and ScreenLab.
  
  When version 2.0 was ready we submitted two apps in App Store, LockScreen and a brand new one, called LockScreen HD. It had all LockScreen features but created wallpapers for iPad and iPad mini displays. Apple rejected both with these reasons, so we took LockScreen HD code, changed the name to ScreenLab and made it universal (working on all iOS devices). The idea was to abandon LockScreen, as Apple didn’t allow us to submit new updates and concentrate only on this new one.
  Yesterday, a phone call from Apple gave us unexpected good news: They honestly admitted the error and approved LockScreen, so we’re still able to update and maintain it. In the meanwhile ScreenLab was submitted in the App Store and at the moment is waiting for approvation.
  So, to make LockScreen “what’s new” message more clear: There won’t be any app called LockScreen HD, there will be one called ScreenLab. See it as a LockScreen big brother. :)

• LockScreen 2.0 was finally approved and released in the App Store.

• Did lot of improvements on the website, most of them under the hood so you can’t see them. But now lemonskin.net is much faster and dynamic. :)

L’unica alternativa che avevamo era abbandonare LockScreen, dal momento che non ci era più permesso aggiornarla e dedicarci completamente alla nuova applicazione.
  Ieri mattina, una chiamata da parte di Apple ci ha comunicato ottime notizie inaspettate: Hanno onestamente riconosciuto il proprio errore e hanno approvato LockScreen, quindi saremo nuovamente in grado di aggiornarla e mantenerla. Nel frattempo ScreenLab era stato inviato all’App Store ed è al momento in attesa di approvazione.
  
  Quindi, per rendere più chiaro il messaggio nella sezione “cosa c’è di nuovo?” di LockScreen: Non ci sarà alcuna applicazione chiamata LockScreen HD, ci sarà ScreenLab. Una sorta di fratello maggiore. :)

• LockScreen 2.0 è stata finalmente approvata e rilasciata in App Store.

• Sono stati fatti molti miglioramenti sul sito, la maggior parte a livello di codice per cui non direttamente visibili. Ma ora lemonskin.net è molto più veloce e dinamico. :)

App Store thinks we’re scammers. :(

Let’s start from beginning: More than one year ago (16 months if I’m not wrong) we released a little utility, called LockScreen Lab.
It lets users create nice wallpapers for the Lock Screen (you know, that screen with “slide to unlock” cool slider), adding text, photos, calendars, notes and other important personal informations. The point was to help the device owner to increase the possibilities to get it back in case it gets lost, as Apple doesn’t provide a so important feature in iOS.
But also help people with serious medical conditions to notify other people in case of danger, like allergies to some medicine, or providing the blood group in case of accidents and so on…

Everything was good, it was approved and, during all this time, we were able to release more than 10 updates, improving the app, adding new interesting features and making our customer happy. So happy that the app has almost 100 five stars reviews in the worldwide Stores (thanks guys!).

About one week ago we submitted a new version, so full of new stuff that we named it 2.0 but it was rejected.

Well, it’s not the first time it happens. Some time ago we had to remove a slider in the wallpaper preview because, according to Apple, it was too similar to the real Lock Screen. Well, the purpose was to show the user how the finished product looked like so it was natural it was similar! But ok, Apple rules so we changed it.
This happened after about 4 or 5 updates, so we learned our first App Store lesson: it’s more or less a matter of luck with reviewers.

But this new rejection is really unbelievable. First of all we were notified that the app review would have taken “a longer review”. We were not really sure about what it meant but for about a week there were no news.

Then, suddenly, the rejection, with this explanation:

Ok, let me explain it better. When you want to assign a wallpaper to your Lock Screen (hmmm… keep in mind this name) you launch Photos app, select a picture, press the menu icon and choose “Use as wallpaper”. You play a bit with zoom and pan and press the “Set” button. At this point you’ve two choices: “Set Lock Screen” and “Set Home Screen”.
Let’s ignore the second because it’s not related to this topic.
Look at the button: how’s called? “Lock Screen”. Why? Because it’s the name of that iOS interface! Apple named it, there are not other way to call it.
So how an app that creates wallpapers for Lock Screen should be called??

We wrote Apple, sure that we could explain them this point of view. It’s not the first time one of our apps was wrongly reviewed (time ago a calculation one was mistaken for a book). We did our best to make them understand we simply named it as “LockScreen lab”, a “laboratory” to create Lock Screen wallpapers. There are no other way to call it, “Wallpaper” would have been wrong because it doesn’t create standard wallpapers.

No way, they replied with another copy and paste, adding the following App Store rule:

So that’s their logic: In the app name there’s the world “Lock”, that should be used only for security applications, like password generators or so.
No margins of discussion, nothing. We must change the app name or it won’t be published. This all of sudden, after months we spent time and efforts to build a brand. Customers know it as “LockScreen”, the whole support website is done around this name, we spent money for ads and promotions that will be wasted if we change the app name. But they don’t care. :(

We are not a big company, we are two small developers, we lost our jobs one year ago because our company failed and we thought we could build a future as Apple developers. We gain a bit more than 100 USD every month thanks to the app, every week an update or a new app is stuck in a review issue we have serious problems to survive to the end of the month.
It’s not fair this way, we can accept all the critics the first time we submit an app, or if something new is not ok when we send an update. But we can’t live with this random lottery that something approved for months suddenly is no more accepted. App Store is full of applications with the “LockScreen” name, and users are not misleaded or tricked.

So we are at a point we have tons of new improvements ready since weeks we can’t release to our customers. The only thing we can do is to release a new application, with a different name, that does the same identical things LockScreen does (with new features of course), and tell our users “sorry, if you want the new stuff you need to buy a new one”. That’s wrong, that’s bad. That’s unfair to all the customer that supported us.

We’re small, so small we can’t ask the App Store for a smarter review, because all we get is a rubber wall. We are little fishes.
And we’re not the only ones, it’s a problem that many other Apple developers face every day. And that’s the reason why some of them leave iOS for other, more open, platforms.
Don’t get us wrong, app approval is a great thing, it provide safety to users. But still have many weak points, like this one.

We know this is not what Apple wants, we understand not all App Store reviewers are perfect. We’d like to keep developing for Apple, we’d like to provide nice and useful little apps to the world, but we can’t survive as a company at these conditions.

We put all our passion in what we do, but we can’t fight random rules. :(

Version 1.6 of D3 DPS introduced auction timers.
Although at first glance this function may seem very simple, it actually conceals many pitfalls that we faced and resolved in order to offer you a service that would respect our standards.

Length of auctions

In the auction house the remaining time is shown in different ways depending on the situation. When an auction has a total duration of more than 24 hours, the minutes are hidden.

This is a major problem when you have to set a timer because, in the first example of the image, we can gave a time left of one day, nine hours and one minute or one day, nine hours and fifty-nine minutes. There’s a long “hidden” margin, variable between a minute and one hour that is unknown until the auction will be less than 24 hours long.

How to solve this problem?

We thought of a very simple and automatic system: When you insert a more-than-24h remaining time, the application asks if you want to set up a so-called “safe alert”. Accepting it, a special alarm will be set two hours before the end of auction, so you can check the minutes in the game and adjust the time.

To activate or deactivate it in an auction already created just slightly modify the timer (even one minute) to get again the confirmation.

One is better than two

Everyone have their habits about alarms. There are those who enter the exact remaining time and those who enjoy a forewarning of a few minutes, so they have time to prepare for the end of auction. The application will give you maximum freedom but, to make it even easier, we have provided a further warning, variable from 5 to 60 minutes. This allows you to set the exact time of the auction and still be notified in advance. Summing these alarms with the 24h safe one, every auction will get up to 3 alarms because, when an object is important, we can’t miss the opportunity to win it!

All the information you need

We have also included a large text field for notes. Because we know that in the game we can’t save auctions in a wishlist (like on ebay), and we have to find the object by setting the individual statistics.

Version 1.6 also introduces other useful features such as a handy table that suggests the statistics improve to increase your DPS (found by pressing the small ( i ) located under the DPS in the character sheet) and improves some formulas for the elemental damage calculation. We hope you’ll enjoy this new version, because we’ve done it with heart. :)

Important information about alerts

Auctions warning messages use local notifications. This means you need to allow the application to send notifications (you can verify it in System Settings > Notifications). Also, remember not to set the device to “silent”, otherwise you may not hear the alarms. Finally also note that the “Do not disturb” function (introduced with iOS6), may prevent the correct notification, if active.

La versione 1.6 di Diablo III DPS ha introdotto gli avvisi per le aste. Nonostante a prima vista questa funzione possa apparire molto semplice, nasconde in realtà numerose insidie che abbiamo dovuto affrontare e risolvere per offrirvi un servizio che rispettasse i nostri standard qualitativi.

Durata delle aste

Nella casa d’aste il tempo rimanente viene mostrato in modalità differenti a seconda della situazione. Quando un’asta ha una durata complessiva superiore alle 24h, i minuti sono nascosti.

Questo costituisce un grande problema quando si deve impostare un timer perché, nel primo esempio dell’immagine, potrebbe mancare un giorno, nove ore e un minuto oppure un giorno, nove ore e cinquantanove minuti. C’è quindi un margine di tempo “nascosto”, variabile tra un minuto e un’ora che non è possibile sapere fino a quando non mancheranno meno di 24 ore al termine dell’asta.

Come risolvere questo inconveniente?

Abbiamo pensato a un sistema molto semplice e automatico: Quando inserite un tempo rimanente superiore a un giorno l’applicazione vi chiede se volete impostare un cosiddetto “allarme di sicurezza”. Accettando verrà attivato un avviso speciale due ore prima del termine dell’asta, in modo da poter controllare i minuti nel gioco e correggere l’orario.

Per attivarlo o disattivarlo in un’asta già creata basta modificare leggermente il timer (anche di un solo minuto) per ricevere nuovamente la conferma.

Uno è meglio di due

Ognuno ha il suo sitema di impostare gli avvisi. C’è chi riporta esattamente il tempo rimanente e chi si concede un piccolo preavviso, in modo da avere qualche minuto per prepararsi alla fine dell’asta. L’applicazione vi lascia la massima libertà ma, per venirvi incontro, abbiamo previsto un ulteriore avviso, variabile da 5 a 60 minuti. In questo modo potete impostare il tempo esatto dell’asta ed essere comunque avvisati con un certo anticipo. Sommando questi allarmi con quello di sicurezza che abbiamo visto prima, possiamo arrivare ad avere ben 3 sveglie per ogni singola asta perché, quando un oggetto è importante, non possiamo perdere l’occasione per provare a vincerlo!

Tutte le informazioni che ti servono

Abbiamo inserito anche uno spazioso campo di testo per le note. Perché sappiamo bene che, non potendo salvare (come su ebay) le aste che ci interessano all’interno del gioco, è necessario ritrovare l’oggetto impostando le singole proprietà.

La versione 1.6 introduce anche altre utili caratteristiche, come una comodissima tabella che vi suggerisce le statistiche da migliorare per incrementare il vostro DPS (la trovate premendo la piccola ( i ) posizionata sotto il DPS all’interno della scheda del personaggio) e rende più precise alcune formule per il calcolo del danno elementare. Speriamo possiate rimanere soddisfatti di questa nuova versione, perché ci siamo impegnati con tutti noi stessi. :)

Informazioni importanti sugli avvisi

I messaggi di avviso delle aste utilizzano le notifiche locali. Questo significa che dovete permettere all’applicazione di inviare notifiche (potete verificarlo in Impostazioni di sistema > Notifiche). Ricordatevi anche di non impostare il dispositivo su “silenzioso”, altrimenti potreste non sentire l’allarme. Infine pure la funzione “Non disturbare” di iOS6 potrebbe impedire la corretta segnalazione degli avvisi, se attivata.

Piccola noticina: L’applicazione è completamente in italiano, nell’articolo le immagini sono in inglese semplicemente perché siamo pigri. ;)

Usa la potenza di Camera+ per scegliere e modificare i tuoi sfondi (funziona anche con i modelli immagine). È tutto automatico, premendo il bottone verrà lanciato Camera+ e tornerai in LockScreen una volta terminate le modifiche.

Questa è un’estate caldissima, ma tutti noi amiamo il sole.

Today (03/06/2012) Apple rejected the update. They didn’t like the preview slider (there since version 1.0), used to save wallpapers, so we had to remove it. No point to convince them that it mimics the Lock Screen view because it has to show how the final image will show in the… Lock Screen! :P

Anyway we removed it, added two buttons and re-submitted it. It’s a bit less gorgeous but important is it works. Here’s the old and new look:

Main features in short:

• New editing engine
  We’re introducing a new interaction mode that will make your life much easier while editing objects. However, if you prefer the old one, it’s still available in the (just added) preferences panel.
• New model
  A new “corner ribbon” model was added to the existing ones.
• Improved model
  The blood group model was enhanced. Now it can contain a whole row of text.
• New transparency in models
  Some existing models were improved as well: now they’ve got a trasparency slider too.
• New animation at objects creation
  Now there’s an animation when you add a new object. This is useful when you have several identical ones on the screen.
• Interface and Help
  We’ve made some changes to the main interface introducing the preferences panel and updating the help pages to include all the new features.
• A bit here and there
  Some bug fixes and other changes you probably won’t notice. ;)

Siamo rimasti silenziosi per un po’ ma non abbiamo smesso di apportare miglioramenti a LockScreen. :)

Oggi vi mostriamo alcune delle caratteristiche principali della versione 1.3 (appena rilasciata ad Apple per l’approvazione).

Oggi (06/03/2012) Apple ha rifiutato la nuova versione. Non gli è piaciuto lo slider nella preview (presente fin dalla prima versione), usato per salvare gli sfondi, e abbiamo dovuto rimuoverlo. Inutile provare a convincerli che la schermata era molto simile a quella di “blocco schermo” proprio perché doveva fornire un’anteprima di come lo sfondo salvato sarebbe apparso nella… Schermata di “blocco schermo”! :P

Comunque nessun problema, abbiamo rimosso la barra, inserito due bottoni e inviato nuovamente l’applicazione ad Apple. La schermata è un po’ meno bella ma l’importante è che funzioni. Ecco il nuovo look:

Carateristiche principali in breve:

• Nuovo motore di modifica
  Abbiamo introdotto un nuovo sistema di interazione che vi semplificherà la vita durante la modifica degli oggetti. Ma è possibile disattivarlo e utilizzare il vecchio metodo, se preferite.
• Nuovo modello
  Un nuovo modello “ad angolo” è stato aggiunto a quelli esistenti.
• Modello migliorato
  Il modello del gruppo sanguigno è ora più flessibile perché permette l’inserimento di un’intera riga di testo.
• Trasparenza in più modelli
  In alcuni modelli esistenti è ora possibile impostare la percentuale di trasparenza.
• Creazione oggetti animata
  Adesso c’è un’animazione quando si crea un nuovo oggetto. Questo è utile quando ci sono numerosi elementi uguali sullo schermo.
• Interfaccia e Aiuto
  Abbiamo fatto alcune modifiche all’interfaccia principale introducendo il pannello delle preferenze e aggiornando le pagine di aiuto per includere le nuove caratteristiche.
• Qui e là
  Alcune correzioni di piccoli bug e altri cambiamenti che probabilmente non noterai. ;)
